Using a charge-only cable for data
Some USB-C cables have no data wires inside. They charge fine but will never transfer files. These often come free with power banks and cheap chargers. If your computer doesn't see your phone, try a different cable.
Expecting fast charging from any USB-C cable
A basic USB-C cable handles 60W. For 100W you need an e-marked cable. For 240W you need a USB-C 2.1 cable rated for Extended Power Range. The cable that came in your laptop box is usually the right one.
Plugging any USB-C cable into a monitor
Video output needs DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt support. Most USB-C cables only handle charging and basic data. Look for a 'D' or lightning bolt symbol near the plug.
Forcing a USB-A plug the wrong way

USB-C is winning

USB4 Version 2.0
This standard pushes speeds to 80 Gbps (and 120 Gbps in one direction). It's aimed at pro video and storage. You won't need it for everyday use, but it's good to know it exists.
240W charging is here

Most thin micro-B cables are USB 2.0. USB 3.0 micro-B cables have a wider, two-part plug (it looks like two plugs side by side). If your cable has a single thin micro-B connector, it's almost certainly USB 2.0.
Will USB4 cables work with my older devices?
Yes. USB4 cables are backward compatible with USB 3.2, USB 3.0, and USB 2.0 devices. They'll run at whatever speed the slowest device supports. You won't break anything by using a newer cable with older gear.
Why does my USB-C cable charge slowly even though it's new?
